MTV once referred to Fatboy Slim’s video as “technically and artistically substandard” and refused to play it. The label gave Fatboy one (or many) of those classic speeches about how nobody’s going to play it and the artist will be ruined … Fatboy Slim refused to change it.

VH1 picked it up at some point, it became a sort of viral hit, before the internet. A few months later, the video won an MTV award, and an MTV Europe award because, of course, MTV recognizes artistry.

Aside from the video, let’s just take a moment to appreciate what a master of sampling Fatboy Slim is.

• Camille Yarbrough – Take Yo’ Praise
• Hoyt Axton – Balance and Rehearsal (documents the recording of the track “Captain America”)
• Steve Miller Band – Lucky Man
• Fatboy Slim — Praise You

Remix Friday

I know how important Ibiza was for electronic music back in the days of DJ Alfredo, Amnesia, and the Brits that went there on holiday and came back (Oaky, Rampling, et al). But, all due respect to THAT scene, in my lifetime Ibiza has been something quite different (fake plastic trees, if you know what I mean).

Electronic music really doesn’t need Ibiza, Ibiza needs good music.

“The music industry may be a crawling hive of hucksters, hipsters and whores. But it has one central glory. One crowning fact. The song. It is about the song and in the end only the song. And great songs cannot be stopped. Cannot be denied … The song. The fucking song. A great song will rise up just because it’s a great fucking song. In a world of hype there is, in the end, only honesty.” — Tony Wilson

I’m the first one in class and the last to leave.
I mean the first one to leave out of class; believe
that I’m a mailbox pimp in my heart ’til I die,
even after I’m all gone and my ashes fry.

Mind you that in 1997, in the American mainstream, Hip Hop was not Hip Hop anymore. There were no B-boys, there was no graffiti. I’m not sure they even had DJs that could cut. All you had was bling bling Rap. The Jason Nevins Run DMC remix was a notable exception but, other than that, you had to go to brits like Fatboy Slim to see this sort of thing.
