Future Thursday

The germans have a word ‘zeitgeist’ (time spirit, the spirit of the times), the attitude, the ethos, the energy that moves a period of time along.

There should be a word for the spirit that permeates gospel, funk, house and everything in between and moves it forward. That undefinable thing that separates the truly funky from the not funky. It has nothing to do with syncopation, counterpoint, or formulas that ‘progressive’ Jazz musicians and shit pop producers put together. Funkgeist?

I don’t know what to call it but the UK has had the lion’s share of it for a minute.

Remix Friday

This is so daft, I don’t even know if it qualifies as a remix. Basically, what’s going on is that Todd Edwards went full-on Todd Edwards. What that means is he used a “technique of cross-hatching brief snatches of vocals into a melodic-percussive honeycomb of blissful hiccups” (as described by a very eloquent music journalist).

The original is a classic, from back in the late 90’s when the French came out of left field and changed how things were done. Je ne suis pas celle que vouz croyez!

• Vermont – Übersprung

“The track I’ll be opening my next DJ set with. It’s more of a melodic soundscape piece with no drums. It’s the piece to reset the vibes so it means I can really build the dynamics of my set from there.” – Skream
